What professional cameramen thinks about the Easyrig products

"Anders Falk is a Swede in Hollywood who among other things freelances as a cameraman. Already ten years ago he benefited from an Easyrig while documenting the making of James Cameron's Titanic, where many hours were spent wading in the water, and there was no opportunity to put down the heavy BetaCam on a dry spot. In recent years small handheld digital video cameras of high quality and low cost have become more common on professional shoots, so Falk was pleased to welcome the introduction of the Turtle-X, intended for these often ergonomically uncomfortable cameras.
Most shoots take place in the Hollywood area, but Falk has also flown to Memphis, Chicago and New Orleans with the compact Turtle-X backpack, which travels well. He brought it along on a documentary shoot in Kosovo, and also used it during a physically grueling shoot about American military training in the desert, where the practical backpack carried tapes, batteries, trail mix and the vitally important hydration bag.
Falk exclusively used the Turtle-X with a Sony Z1-U HDV camera for two seasons of behind-the-scenes shooting on commercials with celebrities endorsing the world famous St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (see Thanks and Giving Campaign www.tg.stjude.org). Participants include Jennifer Aniston, Jimmy Smits, Ray Romano, Bernie Mac and the ever entertaining Robin Williams, whose improvisational routine requires two hours of continuous recording (except for tape changes) without a tripod, which makes the Turtle-X indispensable for long, steady takes. When actor Antonio Banderas, who is personally interested in camera gear, showed up for his shoot he immediately spotted the Turtle-X on Falk's back. The producers noticed how excited Banderas was about Turtle-X and they bought him a rig from BandPro in Burbank, which was handed over two hours later as a thank you for his participation!"

"When I first saw the rig at N.A.B. in Vegas what 4-5 years ago, I knew I needed one! I have shot NFL and various other sporting events. Our company produces special effects and disaster exercises so having the rig on even novice videographers allows us to ‘get the shot’ in the midst of sirens, fire and explosions.
I am always asked, “SteadiCam?” and of course I say no… better. To us it is better. Lighter and more user friendly.
When you aren’t shooting and need a little break, the Easy Rig allows you to do just that with a major teardown of the equipment. Although it allows you to steady your shot, it allows you to be more creative than controlling your camera on a tripod. It is the next best thing!
Then you bring out the turtle which for our smaller cameras, allow us to get into places without cumbersome cases. Traveling with camera is so much easier and convenient. And again, stabilizes the shots you need and for the quick ENG styled shoots we do, this is the right tool for our jobs.
If you have shot you have to have one of these!

Thanks Johan… we look forward to your next great EasyRig!

"Thanks for fixing up my Easyrig. I love the new fitted design on the waist belt. I have used the Easyrig I think for about 5 or six years. It is still my back saver every day. I have been shooting on all of these Reality shows the past few years. The camera seems to stay up for most of the 12 to 14 hour shifts. I can honestly say I would not be doing these shows without Easyrig. I love the ability to cover conversations off the hip without all the shake and all the strain. Monday night on NBC starts a new show I worked on called "Looking For Love". I was the only camera with an Easyrig. It was three weeks of long days and heavy cameras. I survived, had fun, and shot well all because of my Easyrig. I think I may have made a few converts. I try to tell people that it takes a week or two to get used to it. You have to make it your own. When I first got it, I thought how does this help? After a week I learned how to make it work for me. Now I think of it as part of me when I step on the set.

Here I am in my Easyrig. Thanks for a great design. You have extended my camera career. I love what I do but it was getting harder and harder. You have recharged my batteries. Thanks again."

I work as an nature and wildlife photographer in the very north of Sweden. We have snow half of the year, I never have to put my camera in the snow or on the ground because it is hanging in my Easyrig. Often I have to walk a couple of kilometer to get to the set so I just hang my camera to my Easyrig. The persons in the program discuss a lot before we start recording and I just stays reedy to shoot.

I am really satisfied with Easyrig.

Johan!

I have used it for only one major project so far, but it was fantastic. Out in the forest all day with a group of people, I was needing to move around and get close up shots of people as they spoke. I have done this before with out an Easyrig, and by the end of the day I was done, and my shoulder didn't feel right for a couple of days. With the Easyrig I was able to run around all day, have my shots be as stable at the end of the day as they were at the beginning and not be nearly so tired. It was marvelous.

Thanks,
Pat McAbery

Johan!

I've been using my new 400 EasyRig for the past two weeks - five day per week, 10 hrs per day (the work days are 14 hrs and we have the cameras up for close to 10 of those hrs) on a cooking show. The tool helps TREMENDOUSLY! I wish I'd have bought one years ago.

I'm thinking about one of the little ones for use with the new HVX200 and with the DVX100A.

Thanks,
Herb Forsberg

Easyrig is the greatest invention. I bought it for the World Poker
Tour, which required six hours of almost continuous handheld shooting. Even worse, during an intense hand I had to hold a single steady shot for up to ten or fifteen minutes, knowing that anytime could be the decisive moment when somebody throws in the cards. It was torture on my back until I got my Easyrig.
I have been working on many shows since then and now that I own the Easyrig, I will always take it out whenever there is handheld shooting involved, even if it is only for a few quick shots. I own it so why not save my back.

I can honestly say that if I lost my Easyrig, I would not hesitate to buy a new one. It is the best investment to make a hard job easier.

"As a full time Marine wildlife cinematographer, I have the opportunity to travel most of the year to many countries of the world while shooting documentaries. Any specialized equipment I can use to improve the final production is always welcome and to our advantage. I've been using the easyrig for 3 years now and would not go on location with out one! If we use two HD cameras on the shoot , we take two Easyrigs."

Statement Johan, the inventor of Easyrig, August 5 2005

I just have to do a statement for my self.

Right now I am shooting a series about kids that is out in the nature. The kids are doing adventures like climbing high mountains, canoeing, riding Indian horses. I have to shoot the kids from early in the morning until they go to sleep, and I have to carry my camera on me all time.

I think that first now I fully understand what my invention means to cameramen and myself. I am glad to say that my invention works very well. About ten years ago I came up with the idea of Easyrig. Then I shot handheld couples of hours a week, which resulted in a bad back, neck and a bad arm. I remember waking up in the middle of the night and my arm was numbed and hurt so bad, I had to smash it into the wall to get rid of the numbness..

The conclusion for me is that I will be able to shoot for the Swedish Television until I retire. To be able to run the Easyrig Company I had to go down to half time from the Swedish Television. I didn’t want to give up my working as a cameraman. Beeing a camera man is a big thing in my life.

The Easyrig is great. On some shows I live in it. I shoot a mix of 35 mm and Super 16 mm features. I also use it on HD and Beta Cam style shoots. It works great. Of course one of the biggest problems shooting 35 and 16 mm is the weight of the camera. It beats the operator up. Because the camera is so heavy the assistant constantly has to take the camera from the operator so he gets exhausted also. A typical scenario goes like this: The assistant puts the camera on the operators shoulder. The operator frames up. The director walks to the actors and stars talking. The operator is starting to get tired and shaky then the shot starts. With the Easyrig I can stand there comfortably waiting for action. Sometimes I keep the camera on my shoulder between takes.

I own the Cine Model and I actually have to 2 lbs when I shoot video to balance them out. I have been thinking of building a bracket so i could mount the post on a dolly. Maybe we could talk about this possibility. Im sending you some photos. I will look for video of me using the rig. In several shots I am using the Easyrig in low mode with VR glasses. Notice i also have added a bungiecord which I use to secure the arm to keep it from hitting folks.

Ridiculus, a camera in a string
Svensk text klicka här!

I have made a lot of documentaries and Törtlerig makes my job a lot
easier. The string attached to the camera has made it possible to get even better material.

Often when I think that,"that picture will I take on free hand" but almost every time I stand there with shaky hands and blaming my self for the mistake. Even the small cameras, which I at the moment prefer working with, has a tendency to put a quite a heavy load on my muscles after a couple of hours shooting. It takes about a minute to put on my Törtlerig, and after i put it on I can stand for hours with and take steady shots without getting shaky arms.

With Törtlerig I never miss any surprising replies or sudden moves, which is a pretty standard issue caused by movement of the camera tripod. The Törtlerig offers many flexible solutions that make shooting exciting documentaries a lot easier.
And as they say do you want some fish you have to have the hook in the water, the same goes for documentaries the more material the better.

When my day is over, I dismount my rig and wear it in my backpack on my way home on my bike.

Thanks Johan!

My “Greasy-Pig” Easyrig has become an essential part of my kit. It’s provided an entirely new tool in my arsenal - offering an original look whilst resolving chronic muscle strain

It excels when shooting under-the-shoulder – those MTV-style interviews that never end, couch-based hostings, or operating around boardroom tables & desktops. It extends my reach, and offers a smooth, gliding platform at the right eye-line. We simply get so much more usable material. It’s so quick & easy to slip-on that I pick & choose the shots I need it for, and so lightweight that carrying it around the world is never an issue.

The aches and pains are gone too! I’m able to back-up for the next job without the discomfort, less magnesium guzzled, and more energy left for when I get home.

I love it, the clients love it, and the talent thinks it’s cool.
When recently recording MTV-style hostings at a rock festival, another cameraman looked on in amazement and declared it “the perfect tool for the job”. Too true!

This letter came to us March 19, 2005

Dear Easyrig folks,

I started a new job a few weeks ago and found that the cameras they had were much heavier than the ones I had been using in my old job. A hand held camera shoot aggravated an old shoulder injury- caused by a too heavy camera . I was desperate for a solution to my problem. I have a family to provide for and I really need to keep this job.

I remembered seeing an ad for Easyrig and did some research on the web about it. I ended up ordering one and have been thrilled with the product. It was so easy to use and it really kept the camera weight off my shoulder and back. I thought it would take some time to get use to but I shot a commercial the day I got it. It was fantastic! I feel that I can continue in my career now with Easyrig.

Thank you so much for designing and building such an innovative and useful product. I really appreciate the quality of materials and workmanship in it as well.

Sincerely,

Richard Marshall

I have been following the development of Easyrig from the first prototype that came 6 years ago, and I’m very pleased with my experiences of it.

I don’t think I could have offered the directors so much advanced hand held camera without the Easyrig. For those who have tried doing hand held filming with an ARRI 535A...without the Easyrig knows what I’m talking about.
I’m convinced that I couldn’t have made the movies I have, in the same way, without the Easyrig.

For me, the whole point of the Easyrig is to put the camera weight where you can handle it. It is not all of us photographers that were born a Terminator!

I have been working as an cameraman since 1991, -98 did I do my first reality show. Easyrig is a back saver that's out of the question. The fact is that many scenes that I shoot in reality wouldn't have been there without Easyrig. Easyrig is special good in scenes that is static.I have hade great use in sport shooting were the handheld camera is following the match situation all the time.

I strongly recommend Easyrig and know that many production companies that do reality-Tv often put the cost of the Easyrig into there budget, they know they will have better materials.

Hi there,

We recently purchased an Easyrig off you for a Natural History/Travel shoot in Australia's Northern Territory.
Frankly, it was the best bit of kit I took with me and I could not have performed my job anywhere near as good as I did without the Easyrig.
We spent 13 hours a day shooting from a boat; I wore the Easyrig at all
times, not only did it take the weight off my arm (the Z1 was loaded up with toys and very front heavy) but it also helped to smooth the movement of the boat on the water too.
The were many times that the Easyrig enabled me to get shots I wouldn't have managed without it: Low angle above the water as the boat travelled, "craning" up to action on the boat;
Production booked a helicopter one day for aerial footage of the floodplanes. We were 200Km from cilivisation so proper filming choppers were out of the question. The Easyrig became my chopper mount enabling me to shoot safely and reletively steady from the seat.
The next block of the job takes us to Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe - I've been asked to cut back on excess baggage but one thing is for sure - the Easyrig is coming with me!

Best regards,

Chris Burton

I wanted to have steady pictures (like Steadycam) , but I couldn't afford Steadycam. I came up with an idea; to go on rollerblades together with Easyrig. I have been training in rollerblades, so I can start and stop filming without moving my hips – I called this combination Easy-steadycam . Now I can say that my results are very good and I can shot with Easyrig for days without any pain in the back. Also I can get from one shot to another in high speed with steady shot and without shaking.

I have started using Easyrig working on my first Robinson (a.k.a. Survival) show in Malaysia, 2004. The Easyrig made me capable of filming in very low angle pictures for a long time without being exhausted of the weight of the camera. The Easyrig definitely made my life easier working on various reality shows where the cameraman is put to work around the clock.

When the first Easyrig was made, I immediately started to use it.
During many years I had frequently problems with my back. The Easyrig made that problem go away. But additionally the Easyrig gives me so many options to take pictures that I would not be able to take without the rig. I work with the rig on drama, documentaries, sport, music....well, in any genre that I work with.

One of my favorites is to work with the camera from the hip and then raise it up to shoulder level and at the same time move forward or backward. When, for instants, I'm working with music on stage, I can easily take great pictures from low angels. I always
bring the Easyrig with me when filming in case I need to shoot handheld.
